About Germany

The Germany flag was officially adopted on May 23, 1949. It was used by West Germany when the country divided itself into East and West. Note that both were reunited into one nation in 1990.
The tricolore flag was designed in 1832, and the black, red and gold colors were taken from the uniforms of German soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars.

Germany is a founding member of the European Union, and with over 82 million people it has the largest population among the EU member states. The Federal Republic of Germany is a member state of the United Nations, NATO, the G8, the G4 nations and, as of 2006, ranked sixth in military expenditure. Germany is the world's third largest economy by nominal GDP, the world's largest exporter of goods, and the world's second largest importer of goods. It is home to the third-highest number of international migrants worldwide. In 2007 it held the rotating presidencies of both the European Council and the G8 summits. Germany is divided into sixteen states (Bundesländer). It is further subdivided into 439 districts (Kreise, singular Kreis) and cities.

Communism collapsed in eastern Europe with the decline of the USSR (communist Russia). That wall (the Berlin Wall) was breached in 1989, and the reunification of East Germany into West Germany was the inevitable result. Since then, united Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards.

Germany remains a key player in the continent's economic and defense organizations, as well as being one its most popular tourist destinations.
