Japan comprises over three thousand islands, the largest of which are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of land area. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. A major economic power, Japan has the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP. It is a member of the United Nations, G8, G4 and APEC, with the world's fifth largest defense budget. It is also the world's fourth largest exporter and sixth largest importer and a world leader in technology and machinery.

Steeped in centuries of Asian culture and history, Japan, an archipelago of 4 major and over 4,000 smaller islands, is a mostly mountainous country with only 15% of its land cultivable. As a result of that shortage of land, its largest cities ring the coastline. The mammoth metropolis of Tokyo, and the other huge cities along the Pacific Ocean are home to most of its people. Japan, within the blink-of-an-eye, (it seems) became one of the world's major economic forces; its high-quality automobiles and electronics cover the planet.
