The Netherlands flag was officially adopted on February 19, 1937. At one time this tricolor flag was orange, white and blue, as those were the livery colors of William of Orange, a Dutch prince. In the 17th century, red replaced the orange as a flag color, because the orange dye used on the flag was unstable, and turned red after exposure to the sun.
The Netherlands is often called Holland. This is formally incorrect as North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces.
The Dutch themselves seldom use the term Holland to refer to their country. They usually call their country Nederland, which is singular. The plural de Nederlanden in Dutch (the Netherlands) is never used to refer to the present country located in Western Europe, but is used exclusively either to refer to the historical "Low Countries" or as part of the rather formal expression Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (Kingdom of the Netherlands), which includes the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
In the 1960's and 1970's, social changes in drug policies, environmental issues, euthanasia, religion, same-sex marriages and women's rights propelled the Netherlands into a mecca of liberalism. In addition, this progressive and industrialized country was a founding member of NATO. It also proudly joined the European Union (EU), and adopted the Euro in 1999. Always waging war against rising water, there's an old Dutch saying, "God created the earth, but the Dutch created the Netherlands." Well, the Dutch have also created a lasting legacy of art, personal determination, and some of the most familiar icons of our modern world.
The Netherlands is divided into twelve administrative regions, called provinces, each under a Governor, who is called Commissaris van de Koningin (Commissioner of the Queen), except for the province Limburg where the commissioner is called Gouverneur (Governor) which underlines the more "non-Dutch" mentality. All provinces are divided into municipalities (gemeenten), 458 in total (1 January 2006).
