New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two large islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation, being separated from Australia to the northwest by the Tasman Sea, approximately 2000 kilometres (1250 miles) across. Its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga.
New Zealand has come to be known as Aotearoa, which is usually translated into English as The Land of the Long White Cloud.
New Zealand is one of the most recently settled major land masses. The first settlers of New Zealand were Eastern Polynesians who came to New Zealand, probably in a series of migrations, sometime between around AD 800 and 1300. The first Europeans known to have reached New Zealand were Dutch. As the Dutch began to lose their supremacy at sea, New Zealand was subsequently claimed by Britain in 1840. It proudly became a self-governing (independent) Dominion in 1907.
The territorial authorities are sixteen city councils, fifty-seven district councils, and the Chatham Islands County Council. Four of the territorial councils (one city and three districts) and the Chatham Islands County Council also perform the functions of a regional council and thus are known as unitary authorities.
New Zealand has a modern, prosperous, developed economy with an estimated GDP of $106 billion (As of 2006). The country has a high standard of living with a median household income of (NZ$63,000).
