About Vatican City

The Vatican City (Holy See) flag was adopted on June 7, 1929. The colors of gold and silvery-white are the colors of the keys of St. Peter's (the keys to heaven). The emblem centered on the white panel features those keys supporting the papal crown. The keys are tied together by a reddish rope. The flag, like that of Switzerland, is perfectly square.

The state came into existence by virtue of the Lateran Treaty in 1929, which spoke of it as a new creation (Preamble and Article III), not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756 to 1870) that had previously encompassed central Italy. Most of this territory was absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, and the final portion, namely the city of Rome with a small area close to it, ten years later, in 1870. At approximately 44 hectares (108.7 acres), and with a population of around 900, it is the smallest state in the world by both population and area.
The name "Vatican" is ancient and predates Christianity, coming from the Latin Mons Vaticanus, meaning Vatican Mount.

The Pope is ex officio head of state and head of government of Vatican City, functions dependent on his primordial function as the bishop of the Archdiocese of Rome. The Vatican City is itself of great cultural significance. Buildings such as St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel are home to some of the most famous art in the world, which includes works by artists such as Botticelli, Bernini and Michelangelo.
