Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning "Land of the Kalaallit") is a self-governing Danish province located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.
The name Greenland comes from Scandinavian settlers. In the Icelandic sagas, it is said that Norwegian-born Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder. He, along with his extended family and thralls, set out in ships to find the land that was rumoured to be to the northwest.
Explored and named by Erik the Red (982-985), this isolated land was first settled by hardy souls from nearby Iceland. Later, his son, Leif Erickson, returns to Greenland from Norway, and development continues. Subsequently claimed by Denmark in 1380, Greenland is geographically considered part of the North American continent, and is the world's largest (non-continent) island, with approximately 85% of it covered with ice.
In the early 20th century, the United States was believed to have claims made good by discovery and exploration of the Peary expeditions. Robert Edwin Peary (May 6, 1856 – February 20, 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have been the first person, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole -- a claim that has subsequently attracted much criticism.
In 1933, Norway attempted to claim eastern Greenland. The Permanent Court of Arbitration decided that the entire island belonged to Denmark.
Finally, Greenland became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953. And Greenland was granted self-government in 1978 by the Danish parliament, but Denmark still controls Greenland's foreign affairs.
